WIERSMA FAMILY BLOG
A glimpse into our lives as a family with micro-preemies. Our twins boys (Lovingly referred to as our Miracle Men) were born almost 16 weeks early.

Our journey continues when our son Max was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 3. This is his story....

He's here!!

Wow. A new leg of the journey begins. Max came home from the NICU yesterday late afternoon, concluding a 9+ month stay in the hospital. So far, I think he is making the transition better than his parents. Both Max and Wes seem pretty unaffected by what has been a tremendous change in our lives. The most emotional distress Max showed through all the events of yesterday was that I think the cold air made his eyes water a little bit. He did fine in the car on the way home and didn't miss a beat when he woke up in our house. There were about 7-8 different people from CareLinc (the medical equipment provider) and our nursing agency in and out of here for a few hours, and nurse Jennifer stayed from about 8:00 PM last night to 10:00 AM this morning. This is going to be crazy, but having him home is unbelievable. We got to sing and pray with both boys tonight, and I was able to kiss both of my sons "good night" and not "good-bye." Truly something I have been waiting for for such a long, long time. Thank-you to everyone for their prayers yesterday and for the last 9-months. It has been a long, hard, trial filled journey, but it is taking a turn for the better I think. We covet your continued prayers as we adjust to caring for Max at home.

  7. Mark and Kate,

Max looks so good laying on the floor and hanging out with his brother. So happy for you all. We did miss Max yesterday in Nursery 4 when Sherebiah and I rocked in the chair together. Praying for you.

  8. Kate & Mark,

Congratulations to all of you on getting your family all together. We know from personal experience it's a hard battle to fight, and be torn in different areas, as we had Jacob at home when Lauren spent her time in the NICU. But you know they are being well-cared for, and NICU nurses will be your friends for a long time....they become part of your family. We will continue to pray that the transition goes
smoothly and God continues to "smile" upon you!

  18. I love the pics of Max and Wes looking at eachother, he looks much happier on your floor at home than he ever has on nursery 4's floor, thats for sure, he knows he is where he belongs! The giraffe waiting for a baby in Max's spot looks a little out of place, and I miss my daily smiles, but he couldn't be in better hands! Give the boys hugs for me!

  19. Ahhh (a sigh of relief)...it's so good to hear you guys are settling in. I LOVE the picture of the boys facing each other as they play with their toys on the floor. It's so cool to have a sibling to play with! :O)

I love the muscles that Maxwell was flexin' for me yesterday...he's so cute. Wes has the warmest eyes that just melt my heart everytime I see him. I'd do anything for eyelashes like his too. hee hee.

Kate & Mark: Keep up the great work! You two make an awesome team. Each of you get things done and as a healthcare provider you guys really are the greatest Parents (Angels from above).

    Love and prayers, Nurse Dalia

  25. So glad to see Max is home! My sis-in-law, Patti (Dan) Vannette, told me when your boys were born, and I've been following your blog for a few months now. Your family has been in my prayers! I delivered our twin girls at 32 weeks and was blessed to take them home only 23 and 32 days later...I can't imagine 285 days...but God has shown his faithfulness to you, and you continue to praise Him! Thank you for showing me what perseverence looks like! I'll continue to pray that this time of adjusting goes well for all of you!

Please let us all know how we can help you...anything. I just love you guys! I know we all met under strange circumstances, but I hope our boys can be friends as they get older. My prayers will continue to be with you. You hold a special place in my heart. I can't wait to see more picts of them grow bigger and and stronger.
